He was brought across in 1228,
Preyed on humans for their blood,
Now he wants to be mortal again.
To repay society for his sins,
To emerge from his world of darkness,
From his endless Forever Knight.
I remember a few years back, before I had access to the joys (well for me) of Sky One. I was leafing through the satellite listings in the Radio Times (basically, the British equivalent of TV Guide), and saw a show called Forever Knight advertised. I don't remember exactly what it said about the show, but it was something along the lines of a 'vampire detective show', Well, I liked vampire stories, but I must admit I thought it sounded pretty bad. A year or so later, I was at my girlfriend Lucy's house (her parents had Sky... this was before we moved in together) and I had a chance to catch an episode. I never really could explain WHY I wanted to see it. I mean, it really was an outlandish idea. A vampire cop!!?? How on EARTH does a vampire get through the Police Academy? So I watched it. I was rather surprised to discover that I really enjoyed it. So the basic premise sounds crazy. Hell, it IS crazy, but it was so well thought out, so well written, and so well acted, I just didn't care. And of course there was Janette. Deborah Duchene caught my attention very quickly I must admit. I even added a holographic Janette to my Star Trek role playing game, as the ship's bartender. I know, I know, a holographic vampire tending bar on a Federation starship. And you thought a vampire cop was a crazy idea. Well if Picard can have Whoopie Goldberg....... Of course, by season 3 Jeanette was gone, as was Schanke. Introduce the talented Lisa Ryder as Tracy Vetter, Nick's new partner. Despite replacing a well established and very popular character, Lisa did an excellent job, and I quickly became a fan of both the actor, and the character. You can access my Lisa Ryder fan page here.
Anyway, to get back to the topic. Forever Knight chronicles the quest of 13th Century vampire Nicholas de Brabant to regain his mortality and his humanity. Aided by pathologist Natalie Lambert, and haunted by the past, he assumes the role of a Toronto PD homicide detective, permanently assigned to the Graveyard Shift.
OK, so you want to know how he managed to become a cop, and how he managed to get assigned to the Graveyard Shift? Especially given he was brought acrioss in 1228. Well it's pretty damned simple really. Vampires live forever, and sooner or later they have to move on. They can adopt and shed new identites as they need to. Thanks to the skills of a vampire known as Aristotle, our fanged friends can become anyone they want. Nick simply had Aristotle cook up an identity as a Chicago police officer, and Nick signed on with the Toronto PD. Simple. As to the Night Shift, well let's just say his medical papers record a severe allergy to sunlight, thus he can only work at night. Voila. One vampire cop.
So why does he want to be mortal? Well it all goes back to his father. Not his mortal father, his vampire father. Lacroix, the fellow who brought him accross. Lacroix is the quintessential vamp. Not exactly evil, (although sometimes it's hard to tell) but completely amoral. For centuries, Nick stood at Lacroix's side, feeding off mortals. Once a Knight in the Crusades, Nick was never entirely at ease with his vampire life. Finally, around the end of the ninetenth century, Nick swore never to feed off mortals again, and his quest began. He travelled the world for many years, seeking a way to atone for his crimes, and to rejoin the world of mortals. Several times he came close, only to have Lacroix intervene and destroy his work.
Eventually, Nick found himself in Toronto. He first met Natalie Lambert after being brought into her morgue as a corpse after a little incident with a pipe bomb. You can imagine Nat's surprise when Nick got up off the slab and started drinking the blood from her lab freezer. Intrigued by his plight, she offered to help him. Unable to earse her memory, Nick tenatatively agreed to accept her help.
